Victor Rice: A musical pleasure

Victor Rice’s involvement in the world of Retro-Jamaican music, as well as his instrumental and recording technique, have been influential in creating signature sounds of this era in the world of Ska, Reggae & Dub Music.

As a bassist, he started with the Scofflaws in 1988 and was soon involved in other ventures: Founding member of the Stubborn All-Stars as well as The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, he has also toured with Laurel Aitken and Desmond Dekker.

Producing for NYC’s Moon Records in the early 90s, Rice worked with The Skatalites, The Slackers, The Toasters, The Pietasters, The Adjusters, The Epitones and many others. By the late 90's Rice was a regular figure in a majority of the Ska records coming out of NYC, either as bassist engineer or producer.

As musician and producer for NYC's Stubborn Records in the late 90s, he received one of two keys to the Version City Studio in 1996. Finding himself in a limitless environment, Rice focused on the craft of engineering. It was here that he would work with King Django, Rocker T, Crazy Baldhead, Chris Murray and many more, as well as produce his first CD, "At Version City(1999)". He also developed a personal Dub technique that serves him to this day.

Victor is more widely known for his bass and engineering work with Easy Star Records: "Dub Side of the Moon", "Radiodread", "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Dub Band" and "Ticklah Vs Axelrod".

In 2002 Rice relocated to São Paulo, Brasil, where he finished his second CD, "In America(2003)". He built his own mix studio and works constantly for artists in Brazil and Abroad. He has produced and/or mixed records for The Skatalites(JA), Glen Brown(JA), The Slackers(US), Dr Ring Ding and the Senior Allstars(DE), Mr T-Bone(IT), Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra(JP), Pannonia All-Stars(HU), Yellow Umbrella(DE), Brother Culture(UK), Open Season(CH), Hot Drop(ES), Mikkim(CZ), M.A.K.U. SoundSystem(CO) and many others.

Since 2010, Victor has been working more closely with some of Brazil’s best-known artists: Elza Soares, João Donato, Ceu, Marcelo Camelo, Bixiga70 and many others. In 2015, Rice joined a collaboration in São Paulo called Jam Lab, a monthly episode on YouTube that documents the production of one song from rehearsal to vinyl in two days’ time.

Victor has been touring the Continent for nearly ten years with the Strikkly Vikkly DubSystem, a one-man dub show utilizing an 8-track tape machine, mixing desk and live effects. When time permits, he can be found giving workshops in Analog Production Technique.

Συνεχίζοντας την προώθηση της μουσικής κουλτούρας των reggae ηχοσυστημάτων, το Roots Crew Sound System φιλοξενεί για δεύτερη φορά στην Κύπρο έναν σημαντικό εκπρόσωπο της σκηνής αυτής, από το Λονδίνο.

Ο Digby Austin, γνωστός ως Ras Digby ‘the Revival Champion’, υπήρξε ένα από τα μέλη του Sir Jessus Sound System, το οποίο κατά τη δεκαετία του ΄70 είχε εξελιχθεί σε ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά ηχοσυστήματα του Δυτικού Λονδίνου. Κατά τη δεκαετία του ΄80 παρέμεινε ενεργός Selector και Toaster, παρουσιάζοντας παράλληλα ραδιοφωνικές μουσικές εκπομπές. Μέχρι σήμερα συνεχίζει να ταξιδεύει και να προωθεί την roots reggae μουσική με τον δικό του ξεχωριστό τρόπο.

Στις 5 Μαΐου, στο Rocka Rolla στη Λευκωσία, ο Ras Digby με ένα δισκόφωνο, ένα μικρόφωνο και τα δικά του αποκλειστικά ακυκλοφόρητα κομμάτια (dubplates) θα επιχειρήσει να ‘διαδώσει το μήνυμα’ σε μια reggae μουσική συνάντηση με καλή ενέργεια και βαρύ μπάσο.

Aiming to promote the music culture of reggae sound systems in Cyprus, the Roots Crew Sound System hosts for the second time on the island the mighty selector Ras Digby, an important representative of this scene coming out of London.

Digby Austin, better known as Ras Digby "the Revival Champion", was a member of Sir Jessus Sound System, which in the 1970's had become one of the most important sound systems of West London. In the 1980's he remained an active Selector and Toaster while presenting radio music broadcasts. So far, he continues to travel and promote roots reggae music in his own unique style.

Τα The Copy Shop και 2C Design Box και ο Δήμος Λεμεσού σε συνεργασία με το Κανάλι 6, φέρνουν για 11η χρονιά το Street Life Festival στους δρόμους της παλιάς Λεμεσού! Φέτος, το Σάββατο 28 Απριλίου 2018 δίνουμε και πάλι ραντεβού στα στενά της πόλης σε Αθηνών και Σαριπόλου!

Το Street Life Festival φέτος πραγματοποιείται για 11η συνεχόμενη χρονιά και έχει πλέον γίνει ένας θεσμός για την πόλη της Λεμεσού αφού κάθε χρόνο περίπου 20.000 επισκέπτες από όλο το νησί καταφθάνουν στην πόλη μας για να λάβουν μέρος ή να παρακολουθήσουν και να διασκεδάσουν στους χώρους που φιλοξενείται το φεστιβάλ.

Είναι το πρώτο event στο είδος του και έχει καταφέρει να δημιουργήσει μια εναρμονισμένη ατμόσφαιρα μεταξύ της κουλτούρας και της τέχνης του δρόμου με τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο και την ντόπια αντίληψη και νοοτροπία. Όσο τα χρόνια περνούσαν το Street Life κατάφερε να κάνει το graffiti/street art που είναι η βάση του φεστιβάλ πιο αποδεκτό στο ευρύ κοινό και παράλληλα να χρωματίσει προκαθορισμένα κτίρια και περιοχές που το είχαν ανάγκη.

Με αυτό τον τρόπο, οι καλλιτέχνες και κατ΄ επέκταση το φεστιβάλ προσφέρουν όμορφες εικόνες στους καθημερινούς επισκέπτες και εργαζόμενους του κέντρου της πόλης κάνοντας τον κόσμο να αναθεωρήσει ως προς το τι είναι τέχνη και τι βανδαλισμός αλλά και για το πώς θα μπορούσαν να είναι οι δημόσιοι χώροι που μας περιβάλουν καθημερινά. Καλλιτέχνες από όλη την Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό, αναγνωρισμένοι και μη, βάζουν κάθε χρόνο το λιθαράκι τους και όλοι μαζί μετατρέπουν λευκούς ή και λερωμένους τοίχους σε έργα τέχνης και έμπνευσης!

Φέτος θα φιλοξενηθούν και πάλι καλλιτέχνες διεθνούς επιπέδου, εξαιρετικοί καλλιτέχνες στο είδος τους και γνωστοί ανά το παγκόσμιο για την δουλειά και τα εγχειρήματα τους σχετικά με το graffiti/street art.

Eπίσης, οι καλύτερες 30 ομάδες ντόπιων γκραφιτάδων θα συμμετάσχουν όπως κάθε χρόνο στο φεστιβάλ, ανάμεσα τους οι RATE_nls, Edmon1419, Paparazzi, OLAK και άλλοι.

Για ακόμα μια φορά την διοργάνωση του κομματιού του graffiti/street art έχουν αναλάβει οι 2C Design Box που στεγάζονται στην οδό Ιφιγένειας 20.

Εκτός από το γκράφιτι, που προσφέρει έκπληξη και ενθουσιασμό, επίσης άλλες πτυχές της κουλτούρας του δρόμου θα εμπλουτίσουν και φέτος την εκδήλωση.

Όπως κάθε χρόνο το skate και το B.M.X. έχουν πάντα θέση στους ειδικά διαμορφωμένους χώρους προσελκύοντας επίσης επισκέπτες που θέλουν να παρακολουθήσουν τα παιδιά που τους αρέσει να κάνουν κόλπα σε 2 και 4 τροχούς!

Ζογκλέρ, μουσικοί του δρόμου και άλλοι συνθέτουν εν ολίγοις το πάζλ αυτό προσφέροντας σε όλους όμορφες εικόνες που δεν βλέπουμε συχνά στις πόλεις μας.

Επίσης στο κομμάτι της οδού Σαριπόλου όπως συνηθίζεται θα βρίσκεται η σκηνή που φιλοξενεί ντόπιους και ξένους μουσικούς και DJ που αναλαμβάνουν την ψυχαγωγία του κοινού με δυνατή μουσική όπως Rock, Reggae, Hip Hop, Funky, Alternative!

Μπροστά τους μπορείτε να δείτε street dancers να προσφέρουν ένα εξαιρετικό θέαμα και παράλληλα να βολτάρετε στην οδό Σαριπόλου που πάντα στήνεται το παζαράκι του φεστιβάλ με διάφορες χειροτεχνίες, παιχνίδια και άλλα πολλά!

Όλα τα έσοδα από την ενοικίαση χώρων πάνε στο Ίδρυμα Θεοτόκος όπου συμμετέχει επίσης στο φεστιβάλ.

Όλα αυτά, μαζί με την ξεχωριστή αίσθηση δημιουργικότητας και ευχάριστης διάθεσης όλων των παρευρισκομένων θα συντελέσουν για μια ακόμα αξέχαστη Street Life εμπειρία!

Το Street Life Festival άρχισε το 2007, με σκοπό να δώσει ζωντάνια στην περιοχή με χρώματα και σχέδια, να εμπνεύσει την έκφραση, να δώσει μια πιο funky και alternative αίσθηση στην περιοχή καθώς και για να φέρει τον κόσμο πιο κοντά, προσφέροντάς τους μια ξεχωριστή διάθεση.

Έντεκα χρόνια αργότερα, το festival έγινε σήμα κατατεθέν της Λεμεσού και αποτελεί το μεγαλύτερο ετήσιο festival που διοργανώνεται στην παλιά πόλη της Λεμεσού και που όλοι πλέον ανυπομονούν να ξαναζήσουν.

Καλούμε τους επισκέπτες να προσεγγίσουν το κέντρο της πόλης από τον παραλιακό δρόμο. Υπάρχουν διάφοροι χώροι στάθμευσης αυτοκινήτων στην περιοχή του παλιού λιμανιού και της επίχωσης. Απ΄ εκεί ο χώρος του φεστιβάλ απέχει μόνο 150 μέτρα. Σας συνιστούμε να αδράξετε την ευκαιρία και να χρησιμοποιήσετε ποδήλατα ή πατίνια ή να εξερευνήσετε το κέντρο της πόλης της Λεμεσού περπατώντας.

11 years Street Life Festival, by The Copy Shop, 2C Design Box, Limassol Municipality and Kanali 6, for one more year brings the city centre of Limassol back to life!!

On Saturday 28 April 2018, more than 20.000 visitors will fill the popular streets of Saripolou and Athinon, in the old town of Limassol. Building walls, sidewalks and abandoned houses will become the canvas and the inspiration for many street/graffiti artists, from all around the world, that want to express their creativity. Impressive and colourful graffiti/street art will make the streets stand out of the crowd, giving the streets a more contemporary and urban character. And the reason for all these? Street Life Festival, organised for 11 consecutive year by The Copy Shop and 2C Design Box.

Apart from the amazing graffiti/street art drawings, many other activities will draw the attention of the public making their day as memorable as possible: incredible choreographies, cool stunts with skateboards, jugglers and street performers. Visitors can also experience the street market consisting of over 50 different stalls with handmade jewellery, handcrafts, games, dog accessories, furniture and other.

All proceeds from the rent of the stalls go to Theotokos Foundation which also participates in the festival.

Amongst around 30 street art crews, visitors can meet international guest artists. Some of the local crews participating are RATE_nls, Edmon1419, Paparazzi, OLAK and others.

The organizational part of the graffiti/street art, setup and design is a collaboration with 2c Design Box.

Throughout the day visitors can enjoy uplifting and dance beats from local bands

Undoubtedly, this day will be another amazing Street Life experience, full of joyful and creative moments!

Street Life Festival is being organised once a year ever since 2007 and aims to bring a funky and alternative twist in the city of Limassol, to inspire expression, to bring people together and to offer an urban perspective that resemble other European cities. Now, Street Life Festival is considered the biggest annual festival organised in the old town of Limassol with thousands of people looking forward to it every year.

We urge the visitors to approach the city centre from the seafront road. There are various car parks by the old port and on the seafront promenade. From there the festival venue is only 150 metres towards the city. We recommend that you grab this chance to use your bicycles, skates, roller blades and explore the city centre of Limassol.
